When making decisions on which cards would be in the starting lineup of my digital trading card game, I ended up cutting quite a few for one reason or the other. Some were based on game balance but others were based on game progression.
See, I have already planned multiple years of card releases, and to avoid the OG decks getting left behind I’ve also planned in support for those decks. With that support comes additional lore and in the case of Lycan, it was one of two reasons why he was scheduled for later release.
You see, in the lore of the Forest Guard subset, Lycan is a mighty champion that gets cursed after he breaks a sacred rule of the forest that he protected, getting turned into Silenus as a result.
The two cards have similar abilities, but the base deck is built around Silenus, and you may see the issue. Lore wise, it doesn’t make sense for these cards to exist at the same time.
Lycan was converted into what’s called an Ascended Avatar to fix this. Silenus will ascend into him, effectively breaking the curse, but this mechanic won’t be out for a year or two, so neither will Lycan.
